Medal Winner!!!

My little girl was a two-time swimming medalist at the 2008 Bluegrass State Games again this year, for the second year in a row! She is shown here with her 3rd place medals in the 50 meter Breaststroke and the 200 meter IM Relay. She is part of an up-and-coming young swim team that has just begun to hit its stride.  Last year, they sent only 3 people to these State Games, and all 3 came home with 4 medals total (my daughter winning 2 of them).  This year, they sent 6 people, and 5 of them earned a total of 11 medals.  Sadly enough, the community in which we live does not have a year round swimming pool, so her season is pretty much over now, but we are working on obtaining the funds to cover the current pool they have so they can have a winter season as well, until the new, YMCA owned pool is funded and built, which is anticipated to take over 3 years.  It's a shame that such a healthy sport is not better supported in this area, but we hope to change the attitudes and show that kids from Eastern Kentucky can succeed in things besides the traditional sports such as basketball, baseball/softball and football, which will open up new avenues possibly for college scholarships and the like.

A college coach was able to view her swimming privately the morning of the first day of meets at a different location (she went with her swim coach so she could work out uninterrupted).  He was shocked to learn she is only 11 and stated that her techniques in 3 of the 4 strokes (Freestyle, Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke) were almost flawless, and that she could beat a couple of the members of his college swim team right now.

Anyway, way to go!  I'm a proud Dad!

Captioned Movie access Op-Ed and other issues

Hey all, back from my little break....

Go some news to share, after attempting to contact the owner of the theater, and still no response, I submitted an Op-Ed piece to my local newspaper for publication, to call public attention to the numbers of deaf and hard of hearing in Kentucky, and my attempts to get captioned movies into our local theater.  I just received word today, that the Op-Ed piece has ben approved and will be printed soon, although no date was given yet.  I will keep an eye out for it, and post a link to it when it does come out, or post it in it's entirety on here.

I realize, from researching other attempts at getting captioned movies into theaters, that it can be a long, hard road to travel sometimes.  I'm hoping there's a light at the end of the tunnel, since I tend to be a cynic at heart sometimes.

On another subject, I want to address my silence on the whole DBC vs. AG Bell or the Deafhood issues.  Quite frankly, although I have left some comments on other blogs regarding this, I have felt no real desire to jump in, contrary to what I usually do.  The reasons for this are myriad, but the main reason is......A lot of it is stupid and childish and irresponsible.

Too many people (I'm guilty of it as well on occasion) have been responding to these issues with way too much emotion instead of using logic.  A single word or phrase or comment is turning the deaf community on it's ear (pun intended) on almost a daily basis.  While I feel there is some validity to both sides' arguments in both of these two main issues, one thing I was most disappointed about was the decision by one blogger to post an AIM conversation in it's entirety without at least changing the email addresses of those involved in the conversation.  That shows a blatant diregard for another's privacy.  I have no problem with them calling people out on transgressions real or imagined, or even posting links to their already public blogs, but publishing their email or AIM addresses without their explicit permission reeks.  No matter how you look at it, it stinks

The blogger used the excuse that he was not going to change the evidence, and that is laughable.  For example, I would, as someone trying to find out more about this situation, call to attention the fact that several pages of that conversation are missing.  Perhaps one could assume there is something there the blogger did not want revealed?  That may or may not be true, but the fact remains, by not posting EVERYTHING, he changed the evidence.  Someone once said "Numbers can be made to mean anything" and the same is true of this situation.  Without posting EVERYTHING for everyone to read, it appears as if an attempt at manipulating the public's opinion of the situation or conversation is underway.  Don't get me wrong, some of the things said were hateful and harmful and the people should be ashamed of themselves for saying those things.

All that being said, I just want to say this....WHY can't we all just focus on the TRUE core mission, which is to improve the lives and education of deaf people or kids?  There will never be one RIGHT way to do it, it will always take a multi-faceted approach using different methods BECAUSE we are all different as individuals.  What works for one will not necessarily work for another.

There, I've said my piece.  Now, I realize this topic has generated tons of comments and other blogs, but I want to let people know right up front, right now.  If it is NOT conducive to a productive dialogue, if it is just an inflammatory comment meant to provoke someone, I reserve the right to delete it.  You can call it censorship, you can call it whatever you want, but it is my blog and I reserve that right.

I Really Don't Understand This Mindset.

Ok, look—Michael Savage is an idiot and an asshole. I think what he said about 99% of autistic kids being brats and idiots is fucked up. His response to the criticism is absurd as well.

But what I don't understand is why a group of protestors tried to have him fired. His opinions don't interfere with him doing his job, his opinions ARE his job. He's a radio talk show host—if you don't like what he's saying, don't listen to his show. It's that simple.

Soooo, there was some confusion about which day I am playing the Block Party in Seattle. That confusion has been cleared up. I am playing this Saturday July 26th from 4:30-5:30 on the mainstage.

Mr. Angelo Spencer is playing the same day from 2-2:30 on the Cobra Stage.

Sorry about the mix up.

Oh No, We're Running Out Of Street Criminals!

Hey, remember last month when I posted about three separate incidents in one week during which several unlucky criminals here in NYC tried to mug/beat/kill what they thought were defenseless citizens but instead turned out to be off-duty policemen, who then shot them?

Well, there were a few more incidents last week as well:

  • In Brooklyn, an off-duty correction officer was wheeling his motorcycle into his garage when an armed man appeared and tried to steal the motorcycle. The officer pulled his own weapon and shot him in the cheek.

  • In the Bronx, another off-duty corrections officer who was getting gas at 2am was approached by a man who suddenly entered the passenger side of the officer’s car, pulled a gun and demanded that the officer drive them away. The officer pulled his own weapon and fatally shot the suspect.

  • In Queens, an off-duty police detective tried to stop four men who were beating someone. One of the attackers fired at the detective, who then pulled his own weapon and shot the suspect. The attackers ran away, but were found at a hospital and arrested.

This is what is known as a catastrophic failure in the victim-selection process. Please keep doing it.
